A Goodnight Kiss
There was once a mum who kissed her son goodnight every night.
Some nights he pulled away to the other side of the bed so she couldn’t reach him.
Some nights he grimaced and wiped his cheek.
Some nights he moaned that he was too old for kisses.
One night she decided not to kiss him goodnight.
She smiled at him lovingly, said goodnight and went to leave his bedroom.
As she got the the door he said ‘Mum, you forgot something tonight!’
He sat up in bed, reached out his arms and said ‘you didn’t kiss me goodnight’.
His mum walked back with a smile, gave him a hug and kissed him on his cheek.
He didn’t move away to the other side of the bed.
He didn’t grimace.
And he didn’t moan that he was too old for kisses.
He simply hugged her back and then snuggled contentedly under his duvet.
His mum learnt an important lesson that night.
As much as her son resisted her affection night after night, it actually meant a lot to him. He just didn’t show it.
The affection of a parent should never be underestimated no matter how much your child pushes you away.
Every child needs a goodnight kiss and this mum will never forget that again.
