The Christmas Jumper!
When I think ‘Christmas Jumper’ the first thing that pops into my head is Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary! So, I ask myself, at 10.43 on the eve of Christmas Day, what exactly possessed me to choose it as the present of choice for my husband this year?!?!
Over the past few years we have seen the traditionally mocked Christmas jumper rise from the butt of Christmas jokes to the must have item for anyone who is anyone. Celebrities wear them, hip young trendy twenty something’s wear them and the kids even have Christmas jumper days at school. Everywhere I have been over the past month, I have seen jumper after jumper sporting snowmen, Santa’s and reindeer. So, you can see how when I went late night Christmas shopping for the boys school Christmas jumper day (yes, I did miss this on the newsletter, hence the late night last minute shop!), I suddenly had a brainwave for what to buy my husband this year.
We have been together for fourteen years now and taking into account, Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries and Valentine’s Day, that’s going on for about fifty two presents we have bought each other. I always praise myself for the effort I put into buying presents. It is the giving that I love rather than the receiving. But when you have bought that many presents for someone, it can get a little tricky deciding what to give.
So when I decided to give him a Christmas jumper I thought it was the perfect original gift. I did initially think he would either love it or hate it but thought it was a unique, fun present. How could he hate it when it had a Santa with his head stuck in a chimney and a reindeer with a flashing nose that played a little Christmas song mash up?!
Hmm, what can I say, did he laugh raucously when I gave it to him and pat me on the back saying how I had really set the bar high this year? Did he put it straight on and get into the festive spirit with a little ‘HoHoHo?’ Umm, no and no! He looked at me like I had gone insane and asked what his real present was thinking that this was the little joke one on the side!
Initially a little hurt by him not even pretending to like it I have had all day to realise that this was the reaction I should have expected. My husband is a 90’s guy through and through. He still insists on the boys have short 90’s crops and he loves his 90’s house music. And, if I remember correctly, Christmas jumpers were definitely not cool in the 90’s!
If I know my husband as well as I thought I did, this is one present that was never going to go down well. I think it even got a worse reaction than the Batman onesie I got him last year!
I on the other hand, think that Christmas jumpers are definitely the way forward and will without doubt get myself the one with the two Christmas puddings over the boob area next year 😉 !
Merry Christmas Everyone!
