My Radio Debut!
This week was very exciting for me as I had the privilege of being invited into my local radio station for my radio debut! I joined the very lovely Zahir and Jackie on the ‘We Love Woking’ show at Radio Woking. Zahir approached me about going on the show about two months ago when I first started my blog. I followed it up this week and there is nothing like striking whilst the iron is hot as Zahir asked me to be a guest on the show the following day!
Although, if I am being honest it was actually my second time on radio. My debut came some 17 years ago when I phoned up my local radio station in Brighton whilst at university to request the song ‘You sexy thing’ by Hot Chocolate. I am pleased to say that this time I was a lot more mature, a lot less giggly and a lot more sober!
Anyway, lets put that one down to a practise run and go with my first announcement again…………………….
This week was very exciting for me as I had the privilege of being invited into my local radio station for my radio debut!
I didn’t have much time to think about it so just took the plunge. Driving to the radio show my stomach started to do cart wheels. ‘I am a stay at home mum who should be putting my boys to bed right now’ I thought. ‘Why am I driving off to do a radio show?’ ‘Who would want to listen to little old me rabbiting on?’ Then the panic set in. What if I need to cough whilst the microphone is on? What if my mouth goes all dry and I can’t get the words out? What if my voice cracks with nerves? All the while my tummy was churning at the thought of what I was about to do.
Before I knew it I was being whisked into the studio by Jackie. Her friendly smile instantly made me feel at ease as she explained how things worked. Zahir quickly came out to meet me too with a warm smile and shake of the hand. Both of them were so relaxed and welcoming that I felt my nerves start to vanish one by one.
We just had time for a quick selfie in the heart of the studio before the show started. I smiled as the first song they played was one my four year old Danny loves to dance to on Wii dance. I thought of my four little men at home listening intently to the radio in wonder at hearing their mums voice and it spurred me on to do them proud.
All too quickly I was beckoned into the studio, given a set off head phones and a mic and we were away. The minute I started chatting my nerves just disappeared. Zahir and Jackie made it so easy to talk. It was like being in the pub with a couple of friends having a good old natter.
I think my passion for my blog made it easy to talk about it. I am genuinely loving every second I spend on it and hope this comes through in my writing and on the radio show. Before I went on I was asked to choose three songs – one inspirational, one that makes me want to get up and dance and one love song. My inspirational song was Happy by Pharrell Williams as I strive to be happy and make my boys happy in everything we do. Life is far too short to be miserable! My get up and dance song was Ed Sheeran’s Sing. I simply love this song and every time it comes on I get up and shake my booty and sing my heart out. Luckily for the radio listeners tonight, I stifled this to a little swaying on my stool as any singing I may have done would have surely caused all listeners to turn straight off! Needless to say, a beautiful singing voice isn’t one of the things I was blessed with! My love song had to be ‘Something’ by Shirley Bassey as this was my first dance song at my wedding. Thinking about it now though I wish I had gone for Barry White ‘My first, my last, my everything’ as this was my favourite dance at my wedding where my husband and I danced like no-one was watching. Who knows, maybe I will get to go on the ‘We Love Woking’ radio show again in the future and I can choose it then!
If you missed the show and would like to hear it you are in luck! Here is a link to it.
I would love to know what you think so please leave a comment if you want to say hi.
